Western Branch WWTP

Enhanced Nutrient Removal Upgrade, Upper Marlboro, MD

WSSC contracted PEER as part of a team to provide design for Western Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) Upgrade.

PEER planned and implemented the sampling program to determine flow, chemical, and biological characteristics of the influent and recycle streams.  This information was used to determine existing plant performance and to aid in the selection and evaluation of appropriate treatment that would meet National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) requirements, including enhanced nitrogen and phosphorous removal.  PEER was also responsible for handling permit issues and preparing requests for permits.

PEER performed the following tasks as part of the project:

  • Reviewed “as-built”/record drawings
  • Performed wastewater characterization sampling and analysis
  • Prepared Site and Grading Plans
  • Identified construction sequencing considerations associated with ENR modifications
  • Performed batch kinetic rate testing
  • Worked with design team on ENR design
  • Designed yard piping
  • Designed new access road, truck loading and weigh stations north of dewatering building and north of solids handling building
  • Evaluated the existing stormwater collection and disposal system capacity for handling of flow from new impervious areas
  • Inspected stormwater storage areas and outfalls
  • Prepared Stormwater Management Plan and Erosion and Sediment Control Plan and submitted to the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) for permitting
  • Applied for NPDES permit for the new construction
