Soooooo, where are we in the world now?I had a delightful 2-day visit at Washington University where I received my MS in environmental science and engineering in 1968. I was the Earth Day Speaker for the Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering Department. Prof. Pratim Biswass is the Chairperson and he is doing a great job. I had the opportunity to meet the faculty in the department and to meet some of Prof. Biswass’ colleagues from Foundation for Ecological Security. Please “google” that foundation and learn about their amazing successes in reclaiming the environment in India. Their seminar was sufficient for me in realizing how fragile our environment is and that we can make a difference. |

I spoke about the sustainable development projects PEER is working on in South Africa and later that day served on a panel of female faculty that discussed a talk given by Dr. Peter Raven on the environment and our role in enhancing and preserving it.By the way when I was in graduate school at Washington University in 1967, I experienced my first earthquake and thought initially it was just a large truck going down the street at 4:00 a.m. only to find out it was a significant earthquake. About 4:00 am on the morning of my Earth Day talk my hotel room shaking awakened me. I knew immediately it was an earthquake. It lasted about 30 seconds, with several aftershocks mind-morning of that day. I was teased the rest of the day by the engineering faculty and staff for bringing the earthquake back with me! |
