PEER Africa Steps on the Scene… |
|
In 1995, PEER Consultants, P.C. launched PEER Africa (pty.) Ltd. Like PEER Consultants in the United States, PEER Africa was established to provide environmental and sanitary engineering consulting services on the Continent of Africa. Incorporated in South Africa and led by Douglas Guy, PEER Africa quickly realized that while the forte of the US companies were working with the physical environment, the needs in South Africa should be more focused on working directly with the human environment. This entailed the technical areas of infrastructure, water and sanitation to include environmental and public health, energy efficiency, and alternative energy generation, capacity building, and jobs creation. Simultaneously with the development of PEER Africa, international attention was turning to the changing global climate, and the unknown consequences of global warming. South Africa was now adjusting to a new inclusive, black-represented government and a new president by the name of Nelson Mandela. President Mandela made was of his mandates for immediate attention the building of formal homes for over 5 million South African families residing in shacks, a legacy of the Apartheid system. This could not have been a more “heady” time for the formation of a new company eager to demonstrate that solutions to the upliftment of human environment can result in very positive impacts to slowing global climate change concerns. |
